Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has enquired about the condition of 95-year-old Haji Shamsul Haque Molla, who was forced to take shelter under a tree after losing his home in Kotalipara, Gopalganj.
On behalf of the prime minister, a delegation of Amra BNP Poribar visited Shamsul Haque’s home to enquire about his health and family situation, the organisation’s Member Secretary, agriculturist Moksedul Momin Mithun, said.
Mithun said a media report titled “Raised six children, yet at 95, a father finds shelter under a tree” had drawn the attention of Tarique Rahman, who is the chief patron of the organisation.
Following the report, the prime minister instructed his Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Ruman to take necessary steps to support the elderly man, he said.
Accordingly, a delegation led by Mithun visited Shamsul Haque’s home in Uttar Hiron village of Kotalipara. The members enquired about his health and family situation, handed over gifts and conveyed a message of sympathy from the Prime Minister.
Mithun said the prime minister had directed the authorities concerned to ensure safe shelter, necessary care and humanitarian assistance for Shamsul Haque on a priority basis.
“Upon our arrival, we learned that his sons have taken him back into the home and have given assurances that they will look after him for the rest of his life. We will inform the Prime Minister about this development,” he said.
Shamsul Haque spent his life working hard to raise his two sons and four daughters. He reportedly became homeless after distributing his land among his six children.
At one point, he was forced out of his home and had to take shelter under a nearby tree. News reports about his plight subsequently came to the Prime Minister’s attention.
The delegation included Amra BNP Poribar members Masud Rana Liton, Shakil Ahmad and Shahadat Hossain, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Joint Secretary Hasnain Nahian Sajib, and student leaders Mashiur Rahman Mahan and Abdullah Al Misbah.
