Mohammad Ibrahim came off the bench to score the winner as Bangladesh began their SAFF Championship 2026 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Bhutan at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.

The goal arrived in the 69th minute, finally rewarding a Bangladesh side that had spent much of the contest on the attack but struggled to turn possession and chances into goals. Their first-half wastefulness had kept Bhutan in the match, with Bishwanath Ghosh missing several opportunities while playing as an emergency centre-forward.

The visitors were largely occupied with defending, while Bangladesh looked for openings through crosses from the wings and efforts from distance.

The goal changed the scoreline, but Bangladesh’s overall attacking figures still reflected a night of mixed efficiency. They finished with 59 % possession and 17 shots, with only three on target. Bhutan recorded 41% possession, six attempts and three shots on target.

Bishwanath, usually a defender, was among the main targets of those attacks. He headed a Rakib Hossain cross wide in the 18th minute, missed from close range in the 25th and failed to find the target again in the 39th when he had only the goalkeeper to beat. His positioning helped Bangladesh occupy the penalty area, but the chances exposed the difficulty of asking a player whose regular role is in defence to provide a striker’s finishing.

Bangladesh also came close from a set-piece before the interval. Jamal Bhuyan’s free-kick found Shamit Shome, whose header travelled across the goalmouth. However, neither Zidane Alexander Yousuf nor Saad Uddin could make contact.

The hosts continued to rely on crosses after the restart, but Bhutan maintained a compact defensive shape. Bangladesh responded with a double substitution, sending on Ibrahim and Sohel Rana for Jamal and Bishwanath.

Ibrahim made the difference 68 minutes into the match. Shamit rose to meet a cross inside the Bhutan box and directed a header towards goal. The ball went high before dropping in front of Ibrahim, who stretched out a foot to guide it into the net.

Compared with the first half, Bangladesh added five shots after the break but only one more effort on target. Their possession also fell from 64 to 59 per cent as Bhutan had more of the ball in the second period. The visitors, despite offering little sustained attacking threat, finished with the same number of shots on target as Bangladesh.

Bangladesh made further late changes, with Mohammad Ridoy and Rahmat Mia entering the match. Zayyan Ahmed on 64th minute, Fahamedul Islam on 84th minute, and Sohel Rana on 90+5th minute were shown yellow cards.

The contest had also started with a late change to Bangladesh’s leadership. Topu Barman, named captain in the starting line-up, suffered an injury during the warm-up and was replaced by Quazem Shah. Jamal took over the captaincy.

In the end, Bangladesh secured the result they wanted, but the number of missed chances will remain a concern. Ibrahim’s intervention ensured that their dominance did not go unrewarded, even if the performance left room for improvement in front of goal.
