Rooted in the fading world of jatra, ‘King in the Land of the Princess’ is set to make its mark on the global stage after securing a place in the Artcore section of the 48th Moscow International Film Festival.
Directed by Asif Islam, the film revisits the traditional folk theatre form through a stylised, performance-driven narrative. At its centre is Princess, a dancer whose growing popularity reshapes the dynamics of a travelling troupe, reflecting broader changes in audience expectations and entertainment culture.
Leading the cast, Ashna Habib Bhabna takes on the demanding role of Princess Rozi. For this role, she underwent a significant physical and artistic transformation, including gaining weight and training extensively to capture the rhythm, movement and presence of jatra performers. She has described the experience as deeply immersive, noting how the character influenced her both physically and emotionally.
Director Asif Islam expressed his gratitude for the recognition and acknowledged the contributions of his collaborators, including members of Mahashankar Opera and the film’s cast. His interest in jatra, shaped by early exposure to the form, informs the film’s exploration of its gradual transformation over time.
Filming took place in Gobindapur, Faridpur, where a full jatra stage was constructed to preserve authenticity. In addition to Bhabna, the production features performers drawn directly from the jatra circuit, further grounding the film in lived experience.
This marks a return to Moscow for Asif Islam, whose earlier work ‘Nirvana’ earned a Special Jury Award at the same festival.
