Kamindu’s recall forms the headline decision. The selectors cut him from the England series but moved quickly to bring him back, and Dhananjaya paid the price for that call. Pramod Madushan also dropped out, trimming the pace options.
The rest of Dasun Shanaka’s squad sticks closely to the group that faced England. Continuity clearly won the internal argument. Sri Lanka trust familiarity as much as form.
Kamindu’s numbers explain why this call raised eyebrows. He scored only 20 runs across three ILT20 innings for MI Emirates. His recent first-class hundred, though, reminded selectors of his ceiling rather than his dip.
Across his T20I career, Kamindu offers solidity rather than sparkle. He owns 540 runs from 35 matches at a strike rate of 124.71 and adds a handful of wickets. Sri Lanka see balance where others might see caution.
Dhananjaya’s omission reflects cold selection logic. He managed scores of 10, 22 and 11 in his three T20Is this year. In a format that punishes hesitation, those returns left little room for sentiment.
With Madushan gone, the pace attack reshapes itself around Matheesha Pathirana. Eshan Malinga and Dushmantha Chameera support him, giving Sri Lanka a mix of raw pace and experience. That trio will carry the bowling burden.
Pavan Rathnayake keeps his place after cashing in against England. His century in the final ODI forced the selectors’ hand. Runs still speak louder than reputation.
Sri Lanka begin their campaign against Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 8. Australia, Ireland, Oman and Zimbabwe round out the group. The 2014 champions now know their path and their personnel.
