Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, a senior justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been named the new Chief Justice of Bangladesh.
The announcement was made on Monday, and the gazette notification is expected to be issued at any time.
He will take oath as the country’s 26th chief justice on 28 December. Earlier, he served as acting chief justice while Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed was abroad on an official visit.
Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury enrolled as a lawyer in the District Judges’ Court in 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. On August 27, 2003, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division.
His appointment to the High Court Division was made permanent two years later. On August 12, 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as a justice of the Appellate Division.
After obtaining his LLB (Hons) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka, he pursued another Master’s degree in International Law in the United Kingdom.
