Former member of parliament from Naogaon-6 Md Omar Faruk Sumon has been sent to jail in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman issued the order on Thursday afternoon after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense.
Defense lawyer Rokeya Begum, representing Omar Faruk, appealed for bail, arguing that Faruk was elected as an independent candidate from Naogaon-6 constituency and is not affiliated with any political party.
She said that Faruk is also a lawyer and had no involvement or prior knowledge of the incident. Emphasising the need for bail, she requested the court to consider granting it under any conditions it considers appropriate.
However, public prosecutor Md Harun-or-Rashid opposed the bail petition.
After reviewing the arguments from both sides, the court denied bail and ordered that Omar Faruk be sent to jail.
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Faruk from the Mohammadpur area in the capital early Thursday.
According to the case statement, on July 19, during an anti-discrimination protest, victim Imrul Kayes Faisal, 29, participated in a peaceful procession near the Beribadh intersection in Mohammadpur.
During the demonstration, shots were allegedly fired at the protesters with intent to kill. The plaintiff was hit by gunfire and collapsed on the street in a critical condition.
After a lengthy recovery, the victim later filed an attempted murder case, naming 184 individuals, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
