Jahangirnagar University authorities have assured that the counting of votes in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections will proceed without interruption until completed.
The polls were held on September 11 from 9am to 5pm.
According to an official announcement on Friday, the votes are being counted manually. Out of 21 residential halls, counting has been completed in 19, while two remain in progress.
Meanwhile, the central JUCSU ballot count is underway and expected to continue until final results are declared.
The Election Commission expressed hope that counting would be completed and results announced by late Friday night.
The commission also addressed delays in the process, citing the sudden death of Jannatul Ferdous, an assistant professor of the Fine Arts Department who collapsed while on duty Friday morning.
She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
In the wake of her passing, her Namaz-e-Janaza and related arrangements consumed several hours, slowing down the counting process.
“We urge all concerned not to be misled and to extend full cooperation as the work continues,” the commission said in its statement.
The announcement was signed by Proctor Professor Dr AKM Rashidul Alam, who also serves as member secretary of the JUCSU Election Commission 2025.
Meanwhile, after an emergency meeting of the Election Commission on Friday evening, Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan told journalists, “We will now begin the vote counting as per the directives of the Election Commission.”
Addressing everyone involved, he added, “Your patience and efforts will be recorded in history, as the JUCSU election is taking place after 33 years.”
On the process of counting, the vice-chancellor said, “The ballot papers will be counted manually. We hope the Election Commission will complete the count very soon and announce the results you are eagerly waiting for.”
