Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) has launched a renovation initiative at Monpura Lake to create a safer and more suitable habitat for migratory birds visiting the campus.
The renovation work began on Thursday morning, focusing on improving the lake and its surrounding environment.
During a visit to the site, workers were seen using excavators to clean the lake’s banks and bed. To attract migratory birds, “topapana” (floating vegetation) has been placed in the water, along with newly installed wooden perches for resting.
According to Jucsu leaders, once the renovation is complete, Monpura Lake will become an even more favourable sanctuary for birds while enhancing the overall beauty of the area.
To ensure the safety of the visiting birds, cautionary banners have been put up around the lake, and the university’s security division is conducting regular monitoring to prevent unwanted gatherings in the vicinity.
Jucsu has also urged students to refrain from using loudspeakers or playing loud music near the lake during the migratory season.
Jucsu Assistant General Secretary (AGS) Ayesha Siddiqua Meghla, Environment and Nature Conservation Secretary Md Safayet Mir, Executive Member Fabliha Jahan, and Maulana Bhashani Hall AGS Rakib Hasan also visited the scene.
Following the inspection, Safayet Mir said, “We took this initiative to make Monpura Lake more bird-friendly before the arrival of migratory species. Our goal is to ensure that the birds can roam here freely while preserving the university’s natural ecosystem and biodiversity.”
