For the first time ever, a father and son played together in an international cricket match. Timor-Leste made history when 50-year-old Suhail Sattar and his 17-year-old son Yahia Sattar appeared in the same game.
The match took place on 6 November in Bali. It was Timor-Leste’s first international match, and their opponent was the host team, Indonesia. During the game, Suhail and Yahia not only played together but also batted as a partnership, creating a special moment for the team and their country.
Father-son duos are rare in cricket, but they are not completely unheard of. Earlier this year, a mother and daughter played together for the Switzerland women’s cricket team. Methi Fernandes and Neina Methi Saju appeared in six T20 matches as teammates.
There are other examples from cricket history. Former West Indies star Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tejnarain Chanderpaul played 11 first-class matches together for Guyana. In March 2014, Tejnarain even played under his father’s captaincy against the Windward Islands at Providence Stadium.
Afghanistan also had a similar story this year. Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi faced his son Hasan Iasakhil in the final of a domestic cricket league. The match brought a unique father-son moment to the Afghan cricket scene.
