Police have arrested the prime suspect in the murder case of Juba Dal activist Md Mujib, also known as Ghatak Mujib Bhandari, in Raozan, Chattogram.
The suspect, identified as Nayeem, the number one accused in the case, was apprehended from the Bayezid Mazar Gate area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station at approximately 5pm on Thursday. District police confirmed the arrest on Friday.
The victim, 55-year-old Md Mujib, was shot on 25 February at around 7:30 PM in the Oli Miar Hat area of East Guzra Union.
According to sources, the attack was the result of a previous enmity. Mujib sustained critical injuries at the scene and was rushed to the Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician pronounced him dead.
Following the killing, the victim’s wife, Shahanaj Begum, filed a murder case at Raozan Police Station. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Police, a joint investigation was initiated by the District Detective Branch and Raozan Police.
The investigation involved visiting the crime scene, questioning eyewitnesses, and analysing CCTV footage and technical data to identify those involved.
Mohammad Russell, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) for Chattogram District, stated: “Following the investigation, one person has been arrested after raids in various locations. Operations are ongoing to arrest other suspects involved and to recover the weapons used”.
Since the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, Raozan has seen a rise in violence. Various sources report that 21 murders have occurred in the upazila during this period, 15 of which are claimed to be politically motivated.
Additionally, more than 350 people have been injured in over a hundred shooting incidents and clashes.
