Jahangirnagar University (JU) has decided to name its Senate Building in memory of Jannatul Ferdous Moumita, a lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts, who died while performing official duties during the JUCSU election.
The decision was announced in an official notification signed by Deputy Registrar (General Administration) Md Mahtab Uz Zahid on Wednesday.
Moumita, a former student of the Department of Fine Arts (Painting Discipline), fell seriously ill on the morning of Friday, 12 September, while entering the Election Commission office to perform vote-counting duties for the JUCSU election.
Eyewitnesses reported that she lost consciousness and collapsed outside the office around 8:30am.
She was initially taken to the university medical centre and later transferred by ambulance to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where on-duty physicians declared her dead.
Moumita was a member of JU’s 42nd batch. She completed her BFA in 2016 and MFA in 2018 and later joined the same department as a lecturer.
The university’s decision to name the Senate Building after her honours her dedication to education and service during the student election process.
