The death of Jahangirnagar University student Sharmin Akter has sparked mystery and tension in the Islamnagar area adjacent to the campus, with police suspecting it may be a homicide.

Sharmin was an undergraduate student of the 51st batch of the Public Administration department.

Local sources said the incident came to light on Sunday afternoon when her husband returned home and found the entrance locked from outside.

After entering the house, he found Sharmin lying on the floor with a head injury and bleeding, with no sign of movement.

With the help of the landlord, she was rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Ashulia Police Station officers visited the scene after receiving the information and began an investigation.

Ashulia police station officer Kamal Hawlader said that police reached the scene after receiving the information. He added that it was a murder and that an investigation into the incident is underway.

Jahangirnagar University Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said the university administration learned about the matter around 4:30pm.

He said Sharmin was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital where doctors confirmed her death around 4:45pm.

The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
