Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has ordered the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of the accused in the rape and attempted murder of a female student of Jahangirnagar University (JU), following a meeting with the university’s vice-chancellor and student leaders on Tuesday.
The meeting, held at the home minister’s office, was attended by VC Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, along with JU Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) VP Abdur Rashid Jitu and AGS (Women) Ayesha Siddika Meghla.
The discussion focused on the attack on a university student that took place on 12 May, with demands for the rapid identification and arrest of the perpetrator.
After the meeting, the vice-chancellor said the home minister had considered the matter with great seriousness and issued necessary directives to relevant law enforcement officials. He expressed hope that the accused would be arrested soon through the progress of the investigation.
The university administration briefed the home minister on various security measures already taken, including the formation of a Quick Response Team, activation of a hotline for complaints, mandatory ID cards, stricter control over outsider entry, and enhanced security monitoring at gates.
Other initiatives shared included information-based registration of construction workers, shop employees and other associated individuals; removal of mobile shops; increasing the number of security personnel; completing unfinished sections of the boundary wall; and ensuring adequate lighting on campus.
The home minister praised the university administration’s initiatives and assured necessary cooperation from the government to improve security measures. He also assured the investigation and necessary legal action regarding various past crimes committed on campus.
