Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday declined a request to rename the Keraniganj Technical Training Centre (TTC) after former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, saying existing institutions should retain their current names.
Sources at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment said the ministry had submitted a summary seeking approval to rename the centre as “Begum Khaleda Zia Technical Training Centre, Keraniganj.”
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed that such names should be reserved for new institutions rather than applied to existing ones. “If necessary, name a new institution, not an existing one,” he said, according to the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Salah Shibly.
Shibly clarified that the directive makes it clear that current institutions must keep their names, while the proposed name could be used for any new initiative in the future.
The Keraniganj TTC, operated by the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), offers practical training across various trades to help young people develop skills and improve employment opportunities both domestically and abroad.
As part of the government’s efforts to build a skilled workforce, the centre offers training programmes designed to equip young people with the technical and vocational skills required in modern workplaces.
