A journalist of Global Television has alleged that he was picked up and assaulted by police officers at Bijoy Sarani intersection in the capital on Tuesday afternoon after filming officers allegedly beating a woman.
The journalist, Bulbul Hossain, claimed that around 20–25 police personnel were involved in the incident. He said he was recording the scene after noticing several officers assaulting the woman at the busy intersection.
According to Bulbul, some officers confronted him after noticing that he was filming and demanded that he delete the footage. Despite introducing himself as a journalist and refusing to remove the video, he alleged that the officers forced him into a police van and assaulted him.
Recounting the incident, Bulbul claimed that he was hit on the head and pushed to the floor inside the vehicle. He further alleged that an officer stepped on his chest during the assault.
He said he was later able to leave the van with help from bystanders, but the officers continued to verbally abuse and threaten him for recording the incident.
Medical examinations later found a blood clot in Bulbul’s head caused by the injury, along with wounds to his chest and eyes, according to the journalist. Doctors advised him to take complete bed rest for three days.
In a social media post, Bulbul expressed outrage over the incident, saying he felt deeply ashamed as a media professional. He said he was consulting with his organisation and planned to take legal action against the officers involved.
Contacted for comments, Kyashainu Marma, Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon Police Station, said they had not received any formal complaint regarding the matter.
“If a complaint is filed, we will investigate the incident,” the OC said.
