Five children died with suspected measles symptoms in the 24 hours until 8am on Wednesday, raising the country’s combined toll of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 854 this year.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), all five latest deaths were classified as suspected measles fatalities.
With the latest update, the number of suspected measles deaths has increased to 758, while laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remained unchanged at 96.
During the same period, 959 new suspected measles cases were reported, taking the nationwide total of suspected cases to 1,32,905.
Meanwhile, 124 new laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 16,655.
Since 15 March this year, a total of 1,15,234 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals across the country, according to DGHS data. Of them, 1,11,005 have recovered.
