BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on all political parties to set aside minor differences and take part in the upcoming national elections to uphold Bangladesh’s democratic system.
He made the appeal on Saturday during the anniversary event of the Daily Naya Diganta.
Fakhrul emphasised that Bangladesh can progress only through credible elections. “If elections are held on time, we can return to a truly democratic system,” he said.
Highlighting past grievances, he alleged that during the previous government’s tenure, 60 lakh party workers faced false cases, and 20,000 were subjected to enforced disappearances or killings.
The BNP chief urged parties to avoid escalating political violence or disagreements and instead focus on the electoral process as the main path forward.
Recalling the history of press freedom in the country, he said that media faced repression after the establishment of BAKSAL, and it was President Ziaur Rahman who first ensured media independence, paving the way for reforms.
Paying tribute to those killed in the July mass uprising, Fakhrul expressed hope that necessary reforms have been implemented ahead of the election. “Through a credible election, we can move forward along the democratic path,” he added.
