A low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal has intensified, turning first into a well-marked depression and subsequently into a depression, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported on Saturday.
Forecasters warned that the system is likely to move west-northwestwards further and intensify into a Cyclonic storm.
At 6am, the depression was located 1,320 km south of Chittagong port, 1,245 km south of Cox’s Bazar, 1,320 km south of Mongla, and 1,270 km south of Payra port. It is moving west-northwest and is expected to intensify.
The BMD reported that winds near the depression’s centre are reaching 40 km/h, with gusts up to 50 km/h, making the surrounding sea rough.
In response, the Meteorological Department has issued No. 1 distant warning signals for Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports. Fishermen and trawlers operating in the north and deep Bay of Bengal have been advised to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
According to the BMD daily weather update, rain or thunder showers is likely to occur at one or two places over Chattogram division. Weather may remain mainly dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country. Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
