Police recovered the body of a Jagannath University (JnU) student from a mess in Dhaka’s Gandaria area on Sunday night.
A primary investigation suggests it may be a case of suicide, police said.
The deceased, Akash Sarker, was a student of the Department of Drama and Dramatics from the 2014–15 academic session. His hometown is Faridpur.
Eyewitnesses said the body was recovered around 9:30pm on Sunday from the mess on SK Das Road near Bhattikhana Mosque in the area. Akash had been pursuing his postgraduate studies at the university.
Touhid Chowdhury, a fellow student of the Drama Department, said, “Akash led a simple life. He never shared his struggles. None of us realized he was under such mental pressure. He worked at a primary school in Faridpur.”
Ishtiaq, who lived in the same mess, said, “I was studying for my exam. Later, a friend of Akash called me, and I began knocking on his room door. When the door opened, I saw his body hanging. I immediately called the police.”
Nazmul Hasan, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Gandaria Police Station, said, “We received the information around 9:30pm After recovery, the body was sent to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.”
He added that the incident is initially being treated as a suicide; however, investigators are looking into whether there were other causes behind the death.
JnU Proctor Tajammul Haque said, “We have contacted Akash’s family. His brother is coming. Once we receive the police report, we will discuss with the family and decide on the next steps.”
