Jagannath University (JnU) has started distributing a long-awaited special housing scholarship to students following persistent demands and a prolonged student movement.
Symbolic cheques were handed over to several recipients at a ceremony held in the Vice-Chancellor’s conference room on Thursday afternoon.
Under the programme, 10,124 students will each receive Tk9,000, with a total allocation of Tk10 crore. The scholarship covers students from the 15th batch (2019–20 academic session) through to the 20th batch (2024–25 academic session).
Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Rais Uddin said the administration is committed to implementing the students’ fair and logical demands.
He noted that expediting the fund distribution addresses the long-standing housing crisis and assured that efforts are ongoing to accelerate the second campus development and the construction of new residential halls.
Treasurer Professor Sabina Sharmin emphasised that timely disbursement of scholarships is a key administrative responsibility. She confirmed that the Finance and Accounts Office is verifying student data to ensure a smooth and error-free process, and expressed hope that the financial support would ease students’ housing and educational expenses.
The ceremony was attended by the treasurer, deans of faculties, the president and general secretary of the teachers’ association, directors of institutes, departmental chairpersons, hall provosts, proctor, and the controller of examinations. Representatives from the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JOCSU), leaders of various student organisations, and media personnel were also present.
