District Detective Branch (DB) arrested a purohit (Hindu temple priest) in Jhalakathi with 20 pieces of suspected Yaba tablets during a special drive.
The arrest took place on Sunday evening from Baher Road in Jhalkathi town.
Police said a DB team, led by the Officer-in-Charge of Jhalakathi District Detective Branch, was conducting a drug recovery operation in the Sadar area when the suspect tried to flee after sensing their presence. He was later caught on the spot with the help of accompanying forces. Twenty Yaba tablets wrapped in white polythene were recovered from him. The estimated street value of the seized tablets is around Tk6,000.
The arrested person was identified as Suman Chakraborty (41), son of late Tarapada Chakraborty of Central Kali Temple area under Ward No 04 of Jhalkathi municipality. He served as a purohit at the Central Kali Temple.
Police said Sub-Inspector Md Tariful Islam filed a regular case against him under Section 36(1) Schedule 10(a) of the Narcotics Control Act 2018 with Jhalkathi Sadar Police Station.
