Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir supporters on Thursday engaged in a violent clash over dominance in Muladi area of Barishal.
Both sides have reported dozens of injuries, with at least 25 people hurt, including 20 from Chhatra Shibir and 5 from Chhatra Dal. The incident took place at Muladi Government College on Thursday afternoon.
According to the injured Chhatra Shibir workers, the altercation began during a preparatory meeting for an event organised by Chhatra Shibir, scheduled for September 23 at the college.
They claimed that the assault was led by a local Chhatra Dal leader, who shouted slogans such as “Jamaat-Shibir Rajakar, leave Bangladesh at once.” Six injured members of Chhatra Shibir were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for treatment.
However, local Chhatra Dal leader Mahiyuddin Dhali denied these accusations and claimed that Chhatra Shibir members attacked Chhatra Dal leaders after blocking their entry to the campus. The five injured Chhatra Dal members were treated at the local health complex.
Muladi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam explained that the clash stemmed from tensions during the announcement of results for the 11th-grade exams, where a few Chhatra Dal leaders were on stage.
Chhatra Shibir expressed frustration over this, and a confrontation followed. He added that the police intervened quickly, preventing a larger incident. The altercation occurred before the police had arrived at the scene.
