Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has strongly condemned and protested an alleged attempt by Chhatra Shibir to create “planned instability” during a formal university event at Jagannath University (JnU) held to commemorate the July mass uprising.
In a press release, JCD claimed that 40 to 50 Shibir activists forcibly entered the university’s central auditorium during the programme in an attempt to disrupt it.
According to JCD, their activists intervened to prevent the event from being foiled and to maintain a peaceful environment on campus. They said the “unwanted situation” was a direct result of Shibir’s “provocative behaviour.”
JCD further said that Shibir is now attempting to divert the incident into a different channel by raising demands for the university’s second campus project to be handed over to the Army.
The statement said the movement for this demand was originally led by JCD and other progressive student organisations, while Shibir had opposed it at the time.
JCD suggested that Shibir’s sudden activism, occurring as the tender process enters its final stages, is an attempt to influence development projects and controversialise the July uprising memorial.
Moreover, JCD linked the events at Jagannath University to a broader pattern of “terrorist activities” nationwide, citing armed drills at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, and provocative online statements by senior Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir leaders.
The statement also said Shibir is engaging in such activities to distract the public from internal scandals, including allegations of “rape and sexual misconduct” involving their members, in an effort to salvage their image.
JCD reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and democratic politics but warned that it would maintain a firm stance against any attempts to incite terrorism or disorder within educational institutions.
