Javier Cabrera has left his role as Bangladesh men’s national team head coach after his contract expired on 30 April, ending a four-year, four-month spell in charge.
The 41-year-old Spaniard joined in January 2022 and oversaw 39 matches. Bangladesh recorded 10 wins and 10 draws, with 19 defeats during his tenure. His contract ran its full term, and the Bangladesh Football Federation did not renew it.
Cabrera described his time as the longest tenure for a Bangladesh head coach and highlighted key results. Bangladesh reached the SAFF Championship semi-finals for the first time in 14 years under his watch. The side also beat India in an official match for the first time in 22 years and climbed to its highest FIFA ranking since 2016.
“My journey as Head Coach of the Bangladesh National Team comes to an end,” he wrote. “After four years and four months, the longest tenure of a Head Coach in Bangladesh National Team history, I leave with unforgettable memories and experiences that have been worth every single second.”
He pointed to progress in crowd engagement and match environments. “We have come a long way, both on and off the pitch. From playing in front of a few hundred fans to unforgettable nights in packed stadiums.”
Cabrera also stressed squad development. “Over this period, 21 Under-23 players made their debuts, helping establish one of the youngest national teams in Asia and laying strong foundations for the future.”
