Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam has called for the appointment of religious teachers instead of music teachers in the country’s primary schools.
In a statement issued to the media on Friday, the organisation said religious education is of paramount importance at the primary level for the development of moral values and religious ethics among the country’s majority population.
In the release, Jamiat President Shaikhul Hadith Maulana Obaidullah Faruq, and Secretary General Maulana Manjurul Islam Afendi highlighted that the current government had pledged to strengthen religious education prior to the elections.
They argued that the move to appoint music teachers is in direct conflict with that commitment.
According to the statement, the primary objective of education should be to foster morality, humanity, and religious values in children. The leaders maintained that appointing religious teachers would be a timely decision aligned with public expectations.
Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam has urged the government to reconsider its decision and demanded the fulfilment of electoral promises regarding the reinforcement of religious education.
The statement was circulated by Mufti Imranul Bari Siraji, the organisation’s publicity secretary.
