Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled four expelled following an attack on journalists during an anti-fascism protest procession in Dhanmondi on Tuesday, the party announced on Wednesday.
The expelled activists of Dhaka Metropolitan South are Shafiqul Islam, Khairul Alam Russell, Abul Kalam, and Mamun Hossain.
The decision was taken based on the report of a four-member investigation committee formed to probe the incident, according to a press release signed by Abdus Sattar Sumon, Assistant Propaganda Secretary of Jamaat’s Dhaka Metropolitan South.
According to Jamaat’s account, an anti-fascism protest procession was organised on Tuesday by Dhanmondi Zone under Dhaka Metropolitan South. After the procession, a verbal altercation occurred between Jamaat activists and several journalists over speeches. The situation escalated, and several journalists were attacked. Journalist Mahfuzur Rahman Shishir was injured in the incident.
Immediately after the incident, as criticism grew, central and metropolitan leaders of Jamaat visited the injured journalist Shishir’s residence and expressed regret. Formal statements were also issued from the central and metropolitan offices.
The investigation committee was formed subsequently, and based on its recommendations, the party decided to expel the four activists on Wednesday, the press release stated.
