Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has called for electoral transparency and national reform, saying the process must reflect the true will of the people.
In a social media post on Saturday, he acknowledged that the BNP-led alliance secured a majority of seats in the national election and said the outcome has been accepted in respect of the constitutional process.
He said the results have also revealed what he termed a deep and complex reality.
He noted that while the BNP secured around 54 percent of the votes, the Jamaat-led alliance obtained nearly 40 percent of the total vote share, emerging as what he described as a strong national force.
He expressed concern that the first-past-the-post electoral system does not adequately reflect the views of millions of voters.
He referred to 53 constituencies where the BNP won by margins of only a few hundred to a few thousand votes and said several of those seats are under official review by the Election Commission.
He said the challenges raised in those constituencies do not amount to a rejection of the overall national verdict, but represent a legal effort to safeguard the transparency and integrity of votes.
He urged independent institutions to take swift and transparent action to restore public confidence.
Referring to the July Charter, he said the subsequent referendum saw about 68 per cent of voters, or 48,074,429 people, cast Yes votes in favour of reform, which he described as a clear national mandate for change.
He urged the incoming government to respect that mandate, govern with restraint and uphold the rule of law.
He called on the Election Commission to remain neutral, law enforcement agencies to act firmly against violence and intimidation and the BNP leadership to operate within the constitutional framework and hold any law-breaking activists accountable.
He called for maturity and responsibility to protect state institutions and build what he described as a new Bangladesh founded on honesty and accountability.
