Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqul Rahman has stated that his party stands against dividing the nation on religious grounds, advocating instead for national unity.
He made these remarks on Saturday during the “Daee and Wayez Conference” organised by the Central Ulama Committee at the Al-Falah Auditorium in Mogbazar, Dhaka.
Jamaat Ameer emphasised that Bangladesh is a unique example of communal harmony, where people from different religious backgrounds, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, have coexisted for decades.
He highlighted that despite the years of independence, the country has failed to establish a truly humane society, calling for the guidance of religious scholars (Ulama) to help lead the nation.
The Jamaat leader also pointed out that, according to the latest census, 90.8 per cent of the population in Bangladesh is Muslim, with the remaining 9.2 per cent belonging to other faiths. However, he made it clear that the party is not in favour of dividing the nation based on religion, and instead seeks a united nation that values peace and harmony.
He stressed the critical role of religious scholars in nation-building, stating that when individuals, who fear Almighty Allah, take leadership roles, peace will prevail in society.
Jamaat Ameer Shafiqul also highlighted the power of knowledge, emphasising that one educated person can cause more harm to a nation than thousands of others combined. He expressed hope that, under the guidance of Ulama, the nation could find its way forward and resolve its current struggles.
Shafiqul urged the religious leadership to help build a more peaceful and responsible society based on the teachings of the Quran and Hadith.
