A mobile parts businessman was injured after local activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) allegedly attacked a Jamaat-e-Islami procession in the capital’s Gulistan area on Saturday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Kabir Ahmed, 45, sustained a stab wound to his lower back during the clash. Following the incident, Jamaat-e-Islami activists held a demonstration under the Fullbaria flyover to protest the attack.
Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka South Assistant Publicity Secretary Abdul Sattar Sumon said the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon under the Fullbaria flyover. According to Sumon, BNP activists have long been involved in extortion and illegal occupation in the Gulistan area.
He further alleged that BNP workers recently attempted to take control of a local market by locking it, prompting Jamaat leaders to intervene at the request of general traders. Jamaat had called for a protest march today against such acts of terrorism, extortion, and land grabbing. The attack reportedly took place when local businessmen gathered to join the procession.
Akter Hossain, who rescued the victim, said Kabir was stabbed near the Fulbaria BRTC counter during a clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters. He was brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 6pm for treatment. The victim identified himself as a supporter of Jamaat-e-Islami.
DMCH Police Camp in charge (Inspector) Md Faruk confirmed that Kabir is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital’s emergency department.
