A Jamaat‑e‑Islami activist was allegedly shot by unidentified assailants in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali Sunday night.
The victim, Mainul Islam Mahin, 25, of Ayubpur village, was attacked around 11:30pm near his home in Amanullahpur union.
Witnesses said Mahin, son of Abul Hossain, was speaking with friends when four to five masked assailants arrived in a CNG-run auto‑rickshaw and opened fire, hitting him in the leg. As he fell, they fired again before fleeing.
Eyewitness Shaikhul Arefin Shihab said: “We were standing on the road when the incident took place. The miscreants came in an auto‑rickshaw, fired shots, and quickly escaped. Their faces were covered with cloth.”
Locals took Mahin to Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors described his condition as critical. Emergency Medical Officer Hasan Al Mulk said he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Begumganj Jamaat secretary Abdur Rahim condemned the attack, calling it a planned assault.
Habibur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Begumganj Police Station, said police visited the scene immediately after being informed. He added that the attackers’ identities remain unknown and investigations are underway.
