The government has launched an initiative to establish IT villages in every upazila across Bangladesh, aiming to create employment opportunities for one million people, Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam said on Sunday.
Speaking at a reunion of former students of Ambardiya High School in Madhupur, Tangail, Mahbub Anam, also the Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, highlighted that the IT villages, supported by foreign assistance and high-tech park development, will particularly benefit the youth.
“Starlink services have already begun operating in Rajshahi, and similar projects will expand nationwide to provide more employment opportunities,” he added.
Reflecting on the country’s recent political history, Mahbub Anam criticised the governance of the past 17 years under a single party, describing it as ineffective. “For the first time in a long period, the people can celebrate Eid with joy,” he said, emphasising the government’s commitment to public welfare and social development.
He urged political leaders, administrators, and community figures to work collaboratively to maintain peace and ensure a better quality of life for citizens. “Our focus is to make the people’s lives easier and hardship-free, and teamwork across all sectors is essential for societal progress,” he said.
The minister also outlined ongoing welfare programmes, including family cards, health cards, and free internet access at key public locations. He noted that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, the government is implementing its election pledges, and the Farmer Card distribution programme will officially launch in Tangail on 14 April.
The event was attended by Madhupur Upazila BNP President Zakir Hossain Sarkar, Senior Vice President M. Ratan Haider, General Secretary Md. Nasir Uddin, Municipal BNP General Secretary Khandakar Motalib Hossain, reunion coordinator Nurunnabi Shihab, and Ambardiya High School headmaster Abdul Mannan.
