Bangladesh Labour Foundation organised a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Sunday to mark the International Day of the Girl Child 2026. This year’s theme is “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights”.

The rally highlighted the need to ensure girls’ rights to education, play and a safe childhood free from discrimination and exploitation.

Participants also drew attention to the challenges faced by girls engaged in child labour, many of whom are deprived of education, recreation and other basic rights.

The rally called for joint efforts to prevent child labour, end child marriage and gender-based discrimination, and protect girls from rights violations, UNB reports.

It stressed the importance of ensuring that every girl can grow up in a safe and supportive environment.

The 2026 theme was developed through consultations with girls, girls’ organisations, girl-led networks, civil society organisations and United Nations partners. They called for urgent action to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.
