The administration of Islamic University (IU) has decided to suspend 19 teachers and 11 employees. At the same time, 33 students have been expelled and their degrees annulled.
The action follows allegations that they took positions against the July mass uprising.
The decision was taken at the university’s 271st Syndicate meeting on Thursday afternoon, said the Syndicate members.
A five-member investigation committee was formed on 15 March to identify teachers, officials, staff, and students involved in opposing the July uprising. Professor Aktar Hossain, chair of the Al-Hadith and Islamic Studies Department, led the committee.
Based on written complaints, the committee scrutinised documentaries, footages, and newspaper reports, and found proof of their involvement against the mass uprising in 2024.
Following this, the administration issued show-cause notices to the concerned persons.
After submission of the committee’s report, the Syndicate took final decisions regarding the persons.
The teachers named in the list are Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Professor Paresh Chandra Barman, Department of Information and Communication Technology; Professor Debashish Sharma, Department of Economics; Assistant Professor Shahidul Islam, Department of Human Resource Management; Professor Kazi Akhtar Hossain and Professor Shelina Nasrin, Accounting and Information Systems department, and Professor A H M Aktarul Islam, Professor Mia Rasiduzzaman, Associate Professor Afroza Banu, English department.
Others include Professor Mahbubul Arfin of Management department, Professor Shahjahan Mondal and Professor Reba Mondal of Law department, Assistant Professor Majedul Haque of Marketing department, Professor Amjad Hossain of Al-Fiqh and Law department, Assistant Professor Mehedi Hasan of Law and Land Management department, and Associate Professor Jayshri Sen of Computer Science and Engineering department.
The suspended officials include Alamgir Hossain Khan, Abdul Hannan, Walid Hasan Mukut, Abdus Salam Selim, Ibrahim Hossain Sona, Ukil Uddin, Jahangir Alam Shimul, JM Elias, Tofazzel Hossain, Sheikh Abu Siddique Rokon, and Masudur Rahman.
Some of the expelled students are General Secretary of IU unit BCL Nasim Ahmed Joy, Vice-President Munshi Kamrul Hasan Anik, Joint General Secretary Hussain Majumder, Law Affairs Secretary Shakil Ahmed, Organising Secretary Liafat Hossain Rakib, Deputy Cultural Affairs Secretary Anik Kumar, Literary Secretary Abdul Alim, Sports Secretary Bijon Roy.
