Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has alleged that the interim government is moving toward a secret agreement with the BNP.
In a statement on Sunday, he said, “Through a secret understanding, the government may revoke the latest amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and issue an order allowing candidates of any registered political party to contest the election under the symbol of an allied party.”
Earlier, the Advisory Council had approved a draft amendment to the RPO, requiring any registered political party within an electoral alliance to contest the polls using its own symbol.
BNP leaders had expressed objections to this amendment during meetings with the Election Commission.
In his statement sent to the media, Jamaat leader Mia Golam Parwar alleged, “It is being heard that an adviser has reached a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with a BNP leader to scrap this amendment to the election law. If the Advisory Council meeting repeals the RPO amendment under the pretext of this so-called agreement, it will be extremely disgraceful, undemocratic, and clearly politically motivated.”
He further said such a move would raise serious questions about the neutrality of the upcoming election and the assurance of a level playing field.
