Islamic Relief Bangladesh has launched a Tk2.47 crore emergency response programme for flood-hit communities in Chattogram, targeting nearly 9,000 people as humanitarian agencies shift from rescue to relief and early recovery.
The organisation said in a statement on Monday that it mobilised assistance within 72 hours of the flooding and is supporting around 2,000 households in Banshkhali, Satkania and Chandanaish upazilas, where widespread inundation has disrupted homes and livelihoods.
The relief package includes multipurpose cash grants of Tk8,000 per household, alongside hygiene and dignity kits and protection awareness support. The programme prioritises older people, persons with disabilities, widows, pregnant and lactating women, ethnic minority communities and women-headed households.
Islamic Relief said its teams carried out rapid needs assessments and coordinated with local authorities to identify the hardest-hit families, particularly those living in remote areas.
“Islamic Relief Bangladesh is actively working on the ground to deliver life-saving emergency assistance,” said Enamul Haque Sarker, acting head of programme at Islamic Relief Bangladesh. “We remain fully committed to supporting flood-affected communities throughout this disaster and the subsequent recovery process.”
The organisation estimates that around 1.7 million people have been affected by the flooding across the wider region.
Although floodwaters have started to recede, it said humanitarian needs remain substantial, with many families facing damaged homes, lost incomes and disrupted livelihoods.
Islamic Relief called for additional resources to support shelter reconstruction, restore access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and help affected households rebuild livelihoods after losing crops, livestock and other productive assets.
The organisation said sustained recovery assistance would be critical to preventing prolonged economic hardship in flood-affected communities.
