Islami Andolan Bangladesh has announced a three-day nationwide protest programme to press home its five-point demand, including the introduction of the Proportional Representation (PR) voting system in the upcoming 13th national elections.
At a press conference held on Monday afternoon, party Ameer and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim unveiled the programme. Demonstrations are scheduled to take place in Dhaka on 18 September, in all divisional cities on 19 September, and across district and upazila levels on 26 September.
The Charmonai Pir warned that if the government fails to announce the adoption of the PR electoral system, Islami Andolan will join forces with like-minded parties to launch a broader political movement.
During the press conference, the party reiterated its five-point demands, which includes organising the next national election in February based on the July Charter; introducing a Proportional Representation (PR) system in both houses of Parliament; ensuring a level playing field for all political parties to guarantee a free, fair, and acceptable election; holding visible trials of the former fascist government’s oppression, mass killings, and corruption; and banning the activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance, which the party labeled as accomplices of fascist government.
It is to be mentioned here that just 30 minutes before Islami Andolan’s press briefing, Jamaat-e-Islami also announced a similar programme with the same demands.
