Islami Andolan Bangladesh has welcomed the court verdict that overturned a 14-year-old ruling abolishing the caretaker government system, describing the verdict as a ‘milestone’ in addressing what the party termed constitutional disorder.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmad said the ruling effectively reinstates a mechanism that once played a key role in ensuring peaceful transfers of power in the country.
“With this verdict, the system that facilitated smooth and orderly power transitions has regained its legal foundation,” he said, adding that the party “warmly welcomes” the decision.
Maulana Yunus Ahmad criticised the previous Awami League government, accusing it of fostering constitutional and legal instability and exerting undue influence over the judiciary. He described such alleged misuse of state institutions as “destructive” and “rare in modern governance,” claiming it inflicted long-term institutional damage. The latest ruling, he said, serves as a corrective measure.
He further noted that the proposal to restore the caretaker government system incorporated into the National Charter adopted in July would, if approved through public voting, prevent future attempts to dismantle the arrangement. “This system will help establish a peaceful process for the transfer of power in the Bangladesh of the future,” he added.
