Andy McBrine led the defiance with a battling fifty after surviving a dropped chance and two overturned reviews, first building a steady partnership with Andy Balbirnie and later continuing the resistance with debutant Jordan Neill. Bangladesh wasted reviews, missed chances at close field, and failed to capitalise on consistent turn on a surface that should have favoured Taijul Islam, Hasan Murad and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Murad eventually broke the stand between McBrine and Balbirnie, trapping the latter lbw, but Ireland kept frustrating the hosts as Neill settled in and Bangladesh burned another review trying to remove him. Earlier, Humphreys, who survived a review and a missed opportunity at silly point, fell attempting a slog sweep, while McBrine gained another life when an edge deflected off Liton’s boot and struck Shanto.
Starting from an overnight 86 for 5, Ireland’s dogged resistance pushed them to 198 for 7 by lunch, still 103 runs short of avoiding an innings defeat but having clearly made Bangladesh work far harder than expected.
