State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam on Thursday said the BNP government as a government of the people will take all efforts for the welfare of the countrymen.
“We’re still in the early stages of our tenure. We have adopted short, mid and long-term plans to bring necessary changes and reforms in all sectors including electricity and gas. After five years, we will present a full account of our work to the people,” he said.
The state minister added that the BNP will seek votes again after five years by ensuring significant development in all key sectors like electricity, gas, roads infrastructures, law and order, public security, health, education and sport rather than making empty promises.
Mir Shahe Alam made the remarks as chief guest at a cheque distribution ceremony among flood affected people at the Baharchhara Union Parishad premises in Banshkhali Upazila today. Chattogram Zilla Parishad organized the event to handover cash assistance to local inhabitants affected by recent devastating flood.
He said the government is making every effort to support flood victims and has been working on their rehabilitation in the seriously flood-hit upazilas- Banshkhali, Chandanaish, and Satkania.
Both the district administration and the government have stood by affected communities, he said, adding, when relief supplies fell short during the floods, additional allocations were made through discussions with the Deputy Commissioner and the relevant ministry.
“I’ve come to Banshkhali following the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. I was instructed by the Prime Minister to stand by the flood victims and take necessary measures,” he added.
Regarding the development of Banshkhali, the State Minister mentioned that the tender for widening the Anwara-Banshkhali-Chakaria road to 34 feet has already been finalized. The project, costing several hundred crore taka, is targeted for completion within the next one to one-and-a-half years, he said.
Urging BNP leaders and activists to exercise patience, the State Minister pointed out that the party has returned to power after a long time and that a significant tenure of the government’s term still left.
He assured the party leaders and workers who made manifold sacrifices during difficult times would be recognized and rewarded through legal means. They will be provided gradually with employment opportunities and other public facilities within the framework of the law and regulations, he said.
Chattogram Zilla Parisad Administrator Mahabuber Rahman Shamim presided over the function while Khandaker Ikhtekhar Uddin Arafat, Executive Officer of the Chattogram Zilla Parished moderatred it. Chief Executive Officer Chowdhury Rowshan Islam delivered the welcome address.
Mahabuber Rahman Shamim said relief materials were distributed in the affected areas by the Zilla Parished during the flood . Reminding his commitment to stand by the flood affected people soon after his taking office , Shamim said today’s initiative is a part of that commitment.
He added that financial assistance is being provided to 510 families in Banshkhali for their rehabilitation, and such support will subsequently be extended to another 590 families across Chattogram.
