Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday alleged that the interim government was involved in a “planned conspiracy” to defeat the 11-party alliance in the national election.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the 11-party alliance at Kakrail in the capital, Shafiqur said his party accepted the election results but would not compromise on the implementation of the referendum verdict.
The seminar, titled “The spirit of the July mass uprising, implementation of the referendum verdict, and trial of those responsible for the July massacre,” was attended by senior leaders of the alliance, participants in the July movement, and family members of those killed during the unrest.
“We wanted an election, not a conspiracy in the name of an election. A conspiracy was carried out against us, and we strongly condemn it,” Shafiqur said.
He alleged that although the interim government was expected to remain neutral, it had taken part in the alleged conspiracy.
“The interim government’s identity was that of a neutral administration. But it also became part of this conspiracy. They have even acknowledged it themselves,” he claimed.
Shafiqur said Jamaat had accepted the election outcome but maintained that the referendum verdict must be implemented.
He accused BNP of failing to honour the referendum result, alleging that the party had “betrayed the nation” by not implementing it.
The Jamaat chief also alleged that the government was misleading the public over the proposed July Charter and said those who questioned the people’s mandate did not believe in democracy.
He said there would be no compromise on protecting people’s rights, adding that his party would not accept “any form of fascism, whether old or new.”
Other speakers at the seminar alleged that failure to implement the referendum verdict was pushing the country towards a fresh political crisis. They said implementing the referendum outcome was essential to avoid further political instability.
The speakers also called on the government to ensure the speedy trial of those responsible for the July killings and to carry out political reforms in line with public expectations alongside implementing the referendum verdict.
