The area surrounding Hotel InterContinental turned into a battlefield as supporters of Inqilab Moncho clashed with law enforcers while holding demonstrations demanding justice for the murder of the organisation’s spokesperson, Sharif Osman Hadi.
During the confrontation, police used batons, rubber bullets, tear shells, and sound grenades to disperse and resist the protesters. Abdullah Al Jaber, the member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, was allegedly shot by rubber bullets during the incident.
Additionally, at least 30 other protesters, including Ammar, the general secretary (GS) of Rucsu, sustained serious injuries. Many of the injured were found to have wounds caused by splinters from sound grenades.
In retaliation, protesters threw bricks at the police, resulting in injuries to several officers.
The injured protesters were initially taken to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital (BIRDEM) at the Shahbagh intersection, but the hospital authorities blocked them from entering. They were subsequently transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Currently, groups of protesters have taken up positions on the Hotel InterContinental-Bangla Motor road and the InterContinental-Shahbagh road. Police are continuing efforts to move the demonstrators toward Bangla Motor by deploying sound grenades, batons, and tear shells.
Following the shooting of Abdullah Al Jaber, Nasiruddin Patwari, a candidate from the 11-party alliance, arrived at the scene with a procession in protest.
The group was heard chanting slogans such as, “Why the attack on Jaber? We want justice from the administration.” DC Masud Alam of the Ramna Division has arrived at the location to bring the situation under control.
