Cristiano Ronaldo has received a public warning from the Saudi Pro League after protesting over what he believes to be an uneven distribution of transfer resources among clubs, a stance that has already seen him sit out an Al-Nassr match and could lead to another absence.
The 41-year-old Portuguese forward made himself unavailable for Al-Nassr’s recent league fixture, unhappy with how investment from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has benefited rival clubs. With speculation around his future growing, reports suggest Ronaldo may also miss Friday’s top-of-the-table clash against Al-Ittihad, despite returning to training.
Why Ronaldo is unhappy at Al-Nassr
Ronaldo’s frustration centres on what he views as preferential treatment for domestic rivals, particularly Al-Hilal. During the winter transfer window, Al-Hilal spent heavily, signing Kader Meite and Saimon Bouabre for around £26 million each, recruiting Pablo Marí from Fiorentina, and securing former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema on a free transfer.
In contrast, Ronaldo feels Al-Nassr have not been afforded the same level of backing, prompting him to take the unusual step of refusing to play in a derby against Al-Riyadh. That decision has inevitably raised questions about his long-term commitment to the club.
Saudi Pro League issues public response
Saudi Pro League officials have now moved to clarify their position, stressing that all clubs operate independently and under the same financial regulations. In a statement, a league spokesperson underlined that recruitment and spending decisions rest solely with individual clubs, not with the league or any central authority.
“Every club operates independently under the same rules,” the statement said. “Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy are taken by the clubs themselves, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance.
“Cristiano has played an important role in Al-Nassr’s growth and ambition. Like any elite competitor, he wants to win. But no individual, however significant, determines decisions beyond their own club.”
The league added that the tight title race, with only a handful of points separating the top four, demonstrates that the system is functioning as intended and that the focus must remain on football.
Contract situation and release clause
Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in 2023 after leaving Manchester United and has since become the face of the Saudi Pro League, paving the way for several high-profile signings across the division. He is currently tied to one of the most lucrative contracts in world football, reportedly worth close to £500,000 per day, running until the end of the 2026–27 season.
However, uncertainty remains. Reports indicate that Ronaldo’s contract includes a €50 million release clause that could be activated in the next transfer window, should he decide to pursue a move elsewhere.
