Rafiqul Islam, 28, an inmate at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, was found dead on Friday after hanging himself inside the prison.
Senior Jail Superintendent Faruk Ahmed confirmed the incident.
He said “Rafiqul was discovered by prison staff and immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead later that night.”
Rafiqul had been sent to the jail in January this year in connection with a case filed at Keraniganj Police Station. Records show that he had previously served time in prison and was released before returning earlier this year.
Sources inside the jail said Rafiqul learned during his incarceration that his wife had eloped with his brother.
The news reportedly left him deeply distressed.
On Friday afternoon he tied a used winter blanket to a jackfruit tree branch inside the prison and hanged himself.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
