Daffodil International University (DIU) hosted an international symposium today focused on raising awareness of the growing indoor air pollution crisis and its severe impacts on public health. The event, titled “Increase Awareness on Indoor Air Pollution,” brought together researchers, public health experts, policymakers, and students from both local and international institutions to discuss potential solutions and drive effective policy development.
The symposium, co-organised by Daffodil International University, World University Association for Community Development (WUACD), and Universitas Airlangga, took place at the Knowledge Tower of Daffodil Smart City.
Key discussions revolved around the escalating health risks, such as respiratory illnesses and asthma, caused by indoor air pollution, particularly in Bangladesh. Speakers emphasised the urgent need for increased awareness, stronger policies, and collaborative research to mitigate these health and economic threats.
Prof Muhammad Aziz Rahman, Associate Dean of Research at Federation University Australia, and Eng Sapto Andriyono of WUACD, Indonesia, delivered the keynote addresses.
They were joined by other distinguished panelists, including Muhammad Saud from Universitas Airlangga, Prof Mohammad Jamal Uddin from Jahangirnagar University, and Md Enamul Haque, Additional Secretary and Director General at the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Bangladesh.
In his closing remarks, Prof Mohammad Masum Iqbal, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Daffodil International University, stressed the importance of translating research into actionable public policies and community initiatives.
“Daffodil International University remains committed to addressing public health and environmental challenges through the integration of education, research, and social responsibility,” he said.
The symposium concluded with a formal wrap-up and the distribution of commemorative kits, underscoring the collective commitment to improving regional air quality standards. The event is expected to foster continued collaboration in research and public health initiatives focused on addressing indoor air pollution.
