The Indian Parliament will pay tribute to Khaleda Zia, former prime minister of Bangladesh on Wednesday. The homage will be offered during proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Sources confirm that both Houses will include an obituary reference to Khaleda Zia on the opening day of the Budget Session for 2026–27.
Members are expected to observe a moment of silence in recognition of her legacy as a leading political figure in Bangladesh and a notable presence in South Asian politics.
Khaleda Zia, who served three terms as prime minister, passed away on the morning of 30 December 2025 at the age of 80 while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The Budget Session will begin with Indian President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of Parliament. The session is scheduled for 30 sittings over 65 days, concluding on 2 April.
A recess will begin on 13 February, with proceedings resuming on 9 March to allow Standing Committees to review the Demands for Grants from various ministries and departments.
Khaleda Zia’s decades-long political career significantly shaped Bangladesh’s governance and its diplomatic ties in the region, including with India. The tribute underscores India’s tradition of honouring influential leaders from neighbouring nations whose contributions have had a lasting regional impact.
