Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has described India and Bangladesh as catalysts for each other’s sustainable growth and future prosperity.
Speaking at a Republic Day reception held on Saturday to mark the 76th anniversary of India’s transition to a sovereign republic, Verma emphasised that the two nations are uniquely positioned to serve as anchors for robust regional integration.
He noted that while India has evolved into a modern, confident nation and one of the world’s largest economies since 1950, Bangladesh has remained an important co-traveler in this journey.
Historical ties and economic synergy
The Indian high commissioner highlighted that the two nations share a special relationship rooted in an indelible history of shared sacrifices during the 1971 Liberation War.
This bond is further strengthened by a deep cultural affinity, specifically a shared love for the literature, music, and art of figures like Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, whose works continue to connect both societies.
Verma observed that these traditional ties are now reinforced by a transforming landscape of connectivity, including a cross-border pipeline for high-speed diesel and power transmission lines that bring electricity from both India and Nepal to Bangladesh via the Indian grid.
These projects serve as the foundation for true regional economic integration, while integrated supply chains continue to fuel Bangladesh’s prolific RMG and pharmaceutical sectors.
A vision for future-ready collaboration
Looking ahead, the High Commissioner called for future-ready collaborations anchored in trust, innovation, and technology.
He suggested that both countries work together to build shared digital ecosystems, regional value chains, and clean energy corridors that ensure a secure and affordable energy future for the region.
Verma emphasised the necessity of cooperation to address the shared challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability to protect the region’s shared ecology.
Concluding his remarks, the Indian high commissioner reaffirmed India’s commitment to the bilateral partnership, stating that India will continue to support a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.
