The elderly man stranded on the zero line of the Jamalpur border after Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) resisted a push‑in attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has been identified.
His name is Shashti Chandra Barman, 68, a Bangladeshi citizen from Chandlai village in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district.
On Wednesday, he was left stuck on the zero line of Ramrampur border in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur amid uncertainty over his citizenship.
After nearly 24 hours stranded in no man’s land in front of international pillar 1082, BGB rescued him around 7am Thursday and later took him to Bakshiganj Police Station.
BGB at Dhanua Kamalpur said Shashti Chandra will only be handed over to his family once they arrive at the station and confirm their relationship. He is currently staying at the police station.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, BSF attempted to push him into Bangladesh through the Ramrampur border, sparking tension among locals, BGB and BSF.
Later, a video of the elderly man stranded on the zero line circulated widely on television and social media. Following this, his family contacted BGB and confirmed his identity.
