Dhaka stocks resumed their recovery on Monday, with the benchmark index climbing close to the 5,600-point mark as investors returned to selected shares after a brief pause following the fuel price hike.

The DSEX, the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), gained 55.9 points, or 1 per cent, to settle at 5,596 points, compared with 5,540 points in the previous session.

The market opened on a strong note and maintained its positive momentum throughout the session, as buying interest in fundamentally attractive stocks pushed most securities higher despite continued concerns over economic challenges, EBL Securities wrote in its post-closing market commentary.

Trading activity also improved, indicating stronger investor participation. Turnover increased 6.7 per cent to Tk840 crore from Tk790 crore in the previous session.

Textile stocks dominated market activity, accounting for 19.9 per cent of total turnover, followed by pharmaceuticals with 16.8 per cent and general insurance with 11.8 per cent.

Most sectors closed higher. Travel stocks led the gains, rising 5.6 per cent, followed by paper stocks with 5 per cent and life insurance stocks with 3.1 per cent gains.

Mutual funds declined 2.4 per cent, while general insurance stocks slipped 0.5 per cent.

Market breadth remained positive, with 246 of the 395 traded securities advancing, while 100 declined and 49 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse also ended higher.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange’s selected index CSCX gained 38.3 points, while the All Share Price Index CASPI rose 54.9 points.
