Mehazabien Chowdhury has strongly denied reports that she was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with 14 bottles of foreign liquor, describing the allegations as baseless and deliberately defamatory. She has also confirmed that she has initiated legal action over what she termed a smear campaign.
In a lengthy statement posted on her verified Facebook page at 1:54pm on Tuesday,February 24 , the actress categorically rejected the claims.
“I was never stopped at the airport in any of the above incidents,” she wrote. “My handbag or luggage was not seized. There is no question of my luggage or handbag containing anything of the nature of the allegations. I have not faced any incident like the ones being spread. No airport official has even questioned me.”
Mehazabien described the reports as clickbait and challenged those responsible to produce evidence. “Is there any picture, video or any kind of evidence of me being questioned, or of anything illegal being taken out of my luggage?” she asked.
She further stated that defamation had become increasingly common and criticised the use of her image in what she called unfounded reporting. “No one has been able to provide a single piece of evidence in support of the news that has been spread. Yet my picture has been used for clickbait. I have already taken legal action regarding the recent incident in which defamatory propaganda has been launched against me,” she wrote.
The controversy began after a report published on February 21 alleged that on August 17, while returning from Bangkok, Mehazabien, her husband Adnan Al Rajeev and producer Shankh Dasgupta had 14 bottles of liquor seized from their luggage by customs officials. The report further claimed they were released without bail for unexplained reasons.
It was also alleged that the matter involved phone calls from filmmaker Mustafa Sarwar Farooki, former adviser to the interim government, and his wife, actress Nusrat Imrose Tisha.
Following the publication of the report, Mehazabien stated on February 22 that she was being targeted, though she did not directly address the specific liquor allegations at that time.
