While attending the Minar-e-Delhi award ceremony in New Delhi, celebrated Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila has strongly denied widespread social media rumours claiming her death, calling them entirely baseless and distressing.
The rumours began circulating shortly after Monday evening’s programme, causing confusion and concern among fans across Bangladesh and abroad, including India, Pakistan, the US and the UK.
Speaking to the media, Runa Laila said she was surprised and upset by the wave of calls and messages she received following the false reports.
“Suddenly I have been receiving calls from different countries from friends and well-wishers, all asking whether I am fine. People from Bangladesh, America, England, India and Pakistan are all reaching out in concern. It is really surprising,” she said.
The veteran singer added that such rumours are not only personally upsetting but also emotionally distressing for family members and close associates.
Runa Laila suggested that similar false reports had circulated about other public figures in the past and may be the work of coordinated groups. She also called for those responsible to be identified.
Earlier, in a post on her verified Facebook account, Runa Laila clarified that she was in good health. “Rumours are being spread about my death. I want to inform everyone that I am completely fine and well,” she wrote, urging people not to share unverified information.
She also appealed for caution on social media, saying that such false reports are irresponsible and harmful.
The singer expressed gratitude to her fans for their concern and support, while criticising the spread of misinformation about public figures online.
